California first

I feel like I haven’t been here for a long long time.

Let’s see. Over a month ago I fell over a jump in LaRoo’s agility class and bruised a rib. Her agility class — not mine. Then I went to California for 9 days. While there I got the flu. I flew home, laced with cold meds and afrin spray to try to recover before a trip to NY. Rush job for VIV magazine I could not say ‘no’ to over the weekend. Rush rush to get ready for NY. Went to NY, still kind of sick, did NY (next blog), now back. The Inside Story is tonight, then, finally, I can rejoice in nothing, going nowhere, just being home. And I’m over the flu and back to spin. Yea!

In California I had a wonderful visit to Linden Tree Bookstore in Los Altos. John Muir first and second graders came to play, and we had a good time drawing pictures, working the puppets and most of all admiring Sterling. Sterling, Oh Sterling, I love you! He lives with my friend Lynn Benson-Colbert, a dog trainer with M.S. TrueHeart Dog Training in northern CA. Here he is coated with kids.

Read more about Sterling’s career here. Scroll down til you find him in his uniform.

Another highlight of my California trip was meeting Erica Silverman at the San Luis Book Fair Oct. 4th. It was a super cold day, and my flu bug was gnarling around in my throat – and I was still pretending it was allergy. Erica and I hit it off like long lost sisters, and we hope to do a book or 2 together. She is such a talented writer, and writes about things near and dear to my heart. Like horses.  Cowboy Kate and Cocoa, a Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Honor Book, illustrated by the talented Caldecott Honor recipient, Betsy Lewin is the first in a series of fun early reader books.

ps No one I know of got the flu from me. And if you did, I am really really sorry.
