I usually take my holidays on non holiday time, so’s not to travel this time of year. Instead, I hang out at home, working away. Which I love- so that’s fine. But, so, here I am waitin’ around. Waiting, drumming my cold fingers, tapping my toes, bouncing a crossed leg; just, you know, waiting for people to get back to their desks so they can answer some very pressing, to me that is, color questions on the snow book I’m working on. I figure I have at least another week of waiting, so I thought I’d post these sweet but poor quality photos of our brief celebration this year.
I do love New Years Eve though. I love the fire and champagne and the promise of things to come. Looking forward to that. And affordable health care.

Happy Chanuka Minky!

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is ever pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

I sent the Obama girls a copy of “Don’t Lick the Dog,” and just received this lovely pale yellow embossed thank you in the mail.

I’ll always remember my first homework assignment in the first grade because I got it wrong. But I still think I was right. Our teacher, a tall beautiful 50s redhead asked the question:
“What is the Biggest thing there is?”
She wanted her answer in the morning. I wracked my brain. I asked my mom. I looked around. I looked up I looked down. I closed my eyes. I decided the biggest thing ever was the Universe.
The next morning we sat at our desks and the teacher pointed to each of us. “Susie, can you tell me what is the biggest thing there is?”
“An elephant.”
“No, but that’s a very good answer.”
“A whale.”
(Smile, shakes head.)
“The ocean?”
“No, but very good!”
“Wendy?”
“The Universe.”
The teacher stared me in the eye and pursed her lips. Just a little. Then, can you believe this? She smiled and told me, “No. Anyone else? James.”
“A mountain.”
“No, not a mountain. Kerry?”
“A star.”
“That’s right! Kerry is right! It’s a star. Tomorrow I’d like you all to tell me what the very smallest thing is.”
I wasn’t going to fall for that again. The next day I didn’t dare raise my hand.
Maybe I heard the question wrong. Maybe she had asked, “What is the biggest thing in the Universe.” But wouldn’t it still be the universe? I’ve never stopped wondering about this. But honestly? I really don’t want an earthly answer.

You know what I love–loathe? Getting deep into a project and having a blast of inspiration. Love. The loathe is having to go back page by page and renew and relive them all to try to come up to the new Snuff. For the record: children’s books are not simple and easy and some of us don’t just ‘knock them out.’ Maybe some people do, or did, but I don’t know anyone personally that fits in that category.
I’ve been working on this spread for 4 very long days. Over and over with a totally different idea, as per my dummy. Last night I began again, totally different idea. When I should have been sleeping I played with colors. This is the new start, unfinished, but this is totally rocking my boat. In both ways.
