Signed children’s books make great school fundraiser baskets. Especially when they are wrapped so beautifully. My neighbor bought A Cat Like That and Don’t Lick the Dog, along with Samantha Vamo’s beautiful books, Before You Were Here, Mi Amour, and The Cazuela the Farm Maiden Stirred, for the Woodridge Elementary School auction. Samantha included a signed poster with her books. These photos are not great, but there is happy curly yellow easter grass in the basket. If I were the Cat, I would make that my nest.

Literary Lions Gala: A Grand Affair

That’s what they’re calling it, A Grand Affair.

Can you come? Yes, you can come. You may, you can, and I hope you will.

March 10th, I’ll be strolling the Hyatt Regency in my gala frock with a copy of, A Cat Like That tucked under my arm. I’d rather drape it over my arm, but then I would have to soak it for weeks prior and I would never do that to a book. Only floods and censors do that.

I was invited in ’09 when Don’t Lick the Dog released and it was amazing and delicious. I met a lot of smarty pants writers and smarty art patrons and now we are FBFs. No, really. Everyone smiling and friendly, except for What’s His Name. But he might have been smiling on the inside, outside.

Nancy Pearl is emcee and Lee Child, The Affair, is the keynote speaker this year. More writers than you can shake a stick at. (Lancaster Journal, 1818: “We have in Lancaster as many Taverns as you can shake a stick at.”)

Literary Lions fundraiser on Saturday, March 10, in Bellevue. This event raises money for KCLS, which is ranked top in the country. All you have to do is go inside any of the libraries to see why. I wish I lived in the library. I also wish I lived in a barn. I used to want to live at Disney Land. My sister and I wanted so badly for everyone to leave. We would lock the magic gate and have it all to ourselves in yo-ho quiet.

Grand. Affair. Go have one.

Dear Wendy,

I haven’t learned to speak yet, but for some reason, I now know how to tipe. I mean, type. Thank you so much for the beautiful book you sent me. I used to be a black-and-white kind of guy, but this whole 8 months-old-thing has brought along a new appreciation of color. I found myself squealing with delight each time my dad turned the page of your book. Well, he thought I was squealing, but actually I was comparing your color choices to Delaunay’s mystical color system. Dad’s hearing is bad.

Anyway, as soon as I bang a yellow block against a blue block and then throw a truck in my yogurt, I can’t wait to read your book again. It is really beautiful. I haven’t met a cat yet, but now can’t wait. I feel edumacated. I mean, educated.

Launch date for “Snowboy 1,2,3″

Snowboy 1,2,3, a counting book written by my one and only husband, Joe Wahman releases September 27, 2012. It’s a departure from my first two animal- centric books, Don’t Lick the Dog and A Cat Like That. I love animals and the books I’m working on now are about animals, but snow is a cool animal. Snowboy has Andy’s eyes. I thought of Andy’s melty soft, deep dark eyes while I drew Snowboy.

The prose in Snowboy is lean and poetic. I’ve created a complete back story in the illustrations you can read on its own. This was so fun to do, I hope to do more books like this.

Doodle cliff notes:

• My dad tells me about Nopal to help with pain and inflammation for my poodle Andy, who has arthritis and a torn acl. Aging is like stew, too long in the pot.

• Lung cancer.

• Uncle Bonsai, insulin. Another day, another phone call.

• I have a Honey Do list for Joe. One of these lasts for years… I scratch off chores and dare to add more. Who am I to tell someone what to do.

Joe’s list is at hand when a former co-worker from the P-I calls from out of the midwest blue. His son is Easton. We talk about Easton. His name pours out like drip coffee in my phone-sleep pot.
