‘Lead the Way’ video using “Don’t Lick the Dog”

I especially like Michael’s growl: http://www.vimeo.com/8703321

Cross your arms and turn your back when Jake jumps up and barks like that

Before you give a treat to Kate, make your hand into a plate.

Dogs aren't toys to hug and squeeze, or poke or chase or tug or tease. Just like you and just like me; dogs have personalities.

If they could talk these dogs would say, we wish all kids behaved this way.

California first

Filed under: Book readings — Wendy Wahman @ 1:20 pm

I feel like I haven’t been here for a long long time.

Let’s see. Over a month ago I fell over a jump in LaRoo’s agility class and bruised a rib. Her agility class — not mine. Then I went to California for 9 days. While there I got the flu. I flew home, laced with cold meds and afrin spray to try to recover before a trip to NY. Rush job for VIV magazine I could not say ‘no’ to over the weekend. Rush rush to get ready for NY. Went to NY, still kind of sick, did NY (next blog), now back. The Inside Story is tonight, then, finally, I can rejoice in nothing, going nowhere, just being home. And I’m over the flu and back to spin. Yea!

In California I had a wonderful visit to Linden Tree Bookstore in Los Altos. John Muir first and second graders came to play, and we had a good time drawing pictures, working the puppets and most of all admiring Sterling. Sterling, Oh Sterling, I love you! He lives with my friend Lynn Benson-Colbert, a dog trainer with M.S. TrueHeart Dog Training in northern CA. Here he is coated with kids.

Read more about Sterling’s career here. Scroll down til you find him in his uniform.

Another highlight of my California trip was meeting Erica Silverman at the San Luis Book Fair Oct. 4th. It was a super cold day, and my flu bug was gnarling around in my throat – and I was still pretending it was allergy. Erica and I hit it off like long lost sisters, and we hope to do a book or 2 together. She is such a talented writer, and writes about things near and dear to my heart. Like horses.  Cowboy Kate and Cocoa, a Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Honor Book, illustrated by the talented Caldecott Honor recipient, Betsy Lewin is the first in a series of fun early reader books.

ps No one I know of got the flu from me. And if you did, I am really really sorry.

Surprise package from Christina

Filed under: Artists & Writers, Book readings — Wendy Wahman @ 4:46 pm

A mysterious package arrived yesterday. I opened it carefully. Taped and folded.

Caught – my breath … unfold, unfold to find more and more unfolding.

Reveal – Tiny perfect paper poodle purse! And another envelope. A ribbon, untie, open one fold at a time. A story. A story of a story. Lounging now full  length, a tiny narrative of  Don’t Lick the Dog launch, memories made and saved for me by Christina Okeson, my writer/editor late-shift friend from the P-I.

Glittering gems, white lace and fluff, beads, rouge colored ribbon, cutouts of polka dot pink poodles, a tiny metal curlique heart. One heart. The words, Enchanted, Delight, Celebrate. Christina: Thank you. I know who that is in the last photo. Sweet smile, sprawled on dog pillows with his baby sister and auntie. Generous heart, Christina!

header_logoEven if you don’t like dogs or books, this place is worth the trip. If only  I were 4 feet tall, 4 years old and fortunate enough to have a parent to drive me here. I’ll drive myself, along with Vikki and her wonder poodles, TinTin and Nickel:

School days

Somerset elementary I did more drawing from squiggles. I don’t know who has more fun playing this game, them or me, but I think I’ll keep this as part of my act. Act? Me?  Yikes, how did I get here! Wendy, the introvert, playing with puppets in public, and speaking in ‘Andy’s voice’ to a room full of six year-olds.

Someone told me once that, extroverts get energy from parties, introverts get drained. I’m in the drain category, no doubt.. but when I put on my party hat and wear my puppets, pens and pictures, it’s like another me. A butterfly me, slowly stretching her new wings in the warm spring air.

Today I’m going to Queen Anne Books at 2:00. Cat and Vita Pepita, Vikki and TinTin & Nickel the poodles will be there. And me, with my butterfly wings.

My name in letters

Filed under: Book readings, Events — Wendy Wahman @ 6:43 am

Maltby elementary school welcomed me with open arms and busy crayons yesterday. I was greeted by a 30-ft. sign saying, “Welcome Ms. Wahman” I can’t tell you how good this made me feel. When I overcame my embarrassment and got up close, I saw that it was a mosaic of personal notes and drawings from the students. Happily, I got to bring the enormous sign home, and I plan to unroll it and read and photograph some of the art. The day was an embarrassment of riches. One nice person, saying one or 2 or five nice things after another.

I had nothing to fear… except running out of time, and the frustration of not getting to pick every child’s upraised arm and answer every question or hear every story. I hope they write their stories down for me. Maybe I’ll find some on the big sign when I unroll it, like a treasure map, tonight.

Thank you Maltby Elementary and Rick Cissna, Librarian Extraordinarian!

Big kids

Tomorrow I’m going to Maltby Elementary to do a day long visit. I’ve only read to young kids, under 6, and tomorrow will be talking to K – 5th graders. I made a slideshow to talk a little more about art with the older kids. My favorite part is a short bit called, the Importance of Doodles. “Doodles are like daydreams with a pencil. I expect you all to doodle and daydream at least once during my visit.”  Works for me.

Here is my only surviving painting from kindergarten. I thought the kindergartners could relate, and it might entice the fifth graders to  have mercy on me.
